EDITOR’S NOTE: Welcome to the A to Z Challenge, an exercise in self-flagellation we bloggers inflict upon ourselves to teach us discipline as writers and to build audience. During the month of April, I’ll be posting 26 times, once for every letter in the alphabet. Looking on the bright side, we can each be thankful this is an English language exercise and not Khmer, the language of Cambodia, which sets the world record with a 74-character alphabet! After some misgivings, I’ve decided to proceed with my initial idea of blogging about the special people in my life whose names begin with the appropriate letter. There will be difficulties, like having more than one special person whose names begin with the same letter, forcing me to choose. And then there are those letters — O, Q and X among them — where no name springs readily to mind. What will I do then? We’ll have to wait and see!
J is for the Outlaws!
We gave birth to two daughters and a son, but when you take the words son-in-law and daughter-in-law literally, we have more children than that.
In chronological order, we’ve welcomed Jay, Jason and Jennifer to the family, and without them, we wouldn’t have amassed six grandchildren, five of whom you’ve already read about in the A-to-Z Challenge.
I refer to my sons- and daughter-in-law as “the outlaws,” but only in jest. They’re all as “in” as they can be. I try to treat them the same as my own children, meaning there have been times when I’ve wanted to give all of ’em a good smack!
What are the odds all three would have J names? Where the A-to-Z Challenge is concerned, my life would have been a whole lot easier if they were named Quinton, Ursula and Yancy, but there’s nothing I can do about it.
The main thing is that my children all ended up marrying good people who have brought laughter, joy and the occasional 6-pack into my home.
So here’s to Jay, Jason and Jennifer, I wouldn’t be half the father-in-law I am today without you!
What a fabulous family you have. It’s so nice to meet them all. I’m lucky to have great ‘outlaws’ too.

Thanks Nicola! It’s sure nice when you have great outlaws!

Haha.. What a coincidence that they are all J’s 🙂 I’m curious about what you plan to do for XY and Z 😀

That is strange that they all have J names. It’s almost like they got together before they even met your kids and conspired to go by names beginning with J just to make things more difficult for this year’s A to Z Challenge 🙂 I refer to my in-laws as out-laws too.

Indeed, it was a dastardly plot. I must make them pay!

The names! Quinton, Ursula and Yancy !!! I don’t think they would have been very happy as children if they were named as such. Imagine a Yancy…LOL too funny, it’s wonderful that you have embraced your ‘out-laws’ as much as you have.

Yes, I must bend them to my will!

I feel for you – so very unfair! So many J’s. In India, some cultures have the custom of changing their daughter in laws name post marriage…just trying to help 😉

Now there’s an interesting custom! Does that ever cause some hard feelings?

I personally would surely have objected but a friend seems quite comfortable..Each to his err her own I guess.

All Js. Strange indeed. But in this case J=Joy and Jubilation for great out-laws and grand kids!

On my A to Z Challenge, I feel people need to demonstrate more creativity with regard to animal and food names. It would help immensely.
Perhaps one of them would like to start going by a nickname? Makes it easy for you, and no trip to court to get the name change taken care of!

I thought you were a lawyer and would WANT me to go to court!

All your in-laws having J names sounds like it’s a plot ;P Like the other commenters, I call my in-laws (two brothers-in law and a sister-in-law) outlaws too LOL

It’s definitely a plot. My kids always conspire against me!

What you need to do now is focus on building a time machine so you can go back and change names before the kids are born, all in the name of the A to Z Challenge, of course. Your wife will understand and the children *might* forgive you … eventually. 😉 In all seriousness, you have a beautiful family and I love that you call your children-in-law, the outlaws. 🙂

Thank you, and a time machine would come in handy in oh so many ways!

Yes, it would! If you invent it, can I borrow it? 🙂
