My country, ’tis of thee,
Sweet land of liberty,
Of thee I sing;
Land where my fathers died,
Land of the pilgrims’ pride,
From ev’ry mountainside
Let freedom ring!
My native country, thee,
Land of the noble free,
Thy name I love;
I love thy rocks and rills,
Thy woods and templed hills;
My heart with rapture thrills,
Like that above.
Let music swell the breeze,
And ring from all the trees
Sweet freedom’s song;
Let mortal tongues awake;
Let all that breathe partake;
Let rocks their silence break,
The sound prolong.
Our fathers’ God to Thee,
Author of liberty,
To Thee we sing.
Long may our land be bright,
With freedom’s holy light,
Protect us by Thy might,
Great God our King.
God bless America!

The illiterates that dwell among us. Never a truer word spoken.

Thank you, Lizzie. I suppose it’s a bit like Brexit, but with a nuclear flair.

It didn’t seem possible that anything could be worse than the campaign we just endured. Then the polls closed, and it became apparent that enough of my fellow Americans – some of them members of my family, or people I counted as friends – could, indeed, by swayed by a mudslide of misogyny, racism, sexism, lies, hatred, greed, stupidity and divisiveness.
The election of Donald Trump to the highest office in the land promises to bring this great nation to the lowest point in its history. I am physically ill at the thought of what the U.S.A. will become with him in charge, and I truly fear for the future faced by my children and grandchildren.
Those who voted for him, and those who paved his way to power either by not voting or by casting third-party “protest” ballots, have only themselves to blame. You not only failed to condemn him and the madness he stood for, you condoned it, and you are complicit in the chaos we now face.
May God have mercy on us.
